I Don't Need Hillary to Become President, to Know that I Can
Before you start grabbing your pitchforks and preparing your argument, give me a second to explain; this post is about confidence.
Ever since I was a little girl and George W. Bush was running for the first time, I would tell my parents I wanted to be President. It was on my Terrific Kid survey, all the way to my Outstanding Senior Questionnaire in my H.S. yearbook.
Never once, did I believe a women had to achieve the position of Commander in Chief just so that I could later obtain the status. I have always been aware of the glass ceiling, and how women were treated, but I never once believed it would hold me back.
“I dont attribute my overly confident attitude solely to my type A personality, but also to the Village that raised me to believe that nothing is impossible.”
My parents never said "No" thats impossible, or even showed in doubt as I would argue that I was going to be President to one of my siblings. My grandfather would say, "I won't live to see it, but I know you can do it," as I would refer to the political candidate on TV and state, "That will be me one day."
I truly believe that the affirmations, and confidence boosting nudges from the people closest to me allowed the whispers of glass ceilings to be silenced and my dream to stay alive.
What we tell our daughters is IMPORTANT, what we show them is even more IMPORTANT. Whether they want to be President, an astronaut, or brain surgeon; believe them and do everything you can to support them because I truly believe that is the only reason I am confident enough to pursue my dreams today.
I'm not sure what possesses a young girl to aspire to be ruler of the free world (other than it sounds awesome), because frankly these days First Lady looks a little more up my alley; but I am thankful I didn't need Hillary to do it first.
So as you vote today, watch the news, and consider ranting in the presence of your sons and daughters, know that they are soaking in every moment of it; and whomever becomes President deserves our respect.
Happy Election Day!
